Asher Roth used to only be known for loving college; in fact, plenty of people still only know him for those 15 minutes of fame. What many people haven’t realized is that once those 15 minutes faded, Roth went undercover releasing numerous mixtapes and laying down a new foundation for his fast-witted rhyme game. The first mixtape he released after Asleep in the Bread Aisle, the album that included “I Love College”, was Seared Foie Gras – and the opener, “Muddy Swim Trunks”, opened the door to a new era for the rapper.
The track begins with a single line of dialogue: “One day I’m going to say something really impressive.” Better sooner than later, because the rhymes are above and beyond anything he had released before this. No hook, no features, only Asher Roth blazing through the horns and hazy drums with a fiery assault.
The music video is every bit of iconic symbolism as the song itself. It begins with Roth rolling out of the bread aisle, waking up from the mythology that was his first album’s title. It represents a change of pace that he’s stayed consistent with and improved upon ever since. Shot in one single tracking motion through a surrealist’s grocery, full of mythical fauns and topless women.
To this day, I consider it one of the best Asher Roth songs, but more importantly it allowed the Roth we hear today to come to fruition.
