News has broken that rapper Kid Cudi (a.k.a. Scott Mescudi) is no longer part of Kanye West’s music label G.O.O.D. Music. West helped bring Mescudi to the forefront of alternative rap music by signing him to G.O.O.D. Music and releasing his first studio album Man on the Moon: The End of the Day in 2009. The decision was Mescudi’s, who was quoted as “wanting to focus on his own direction without having to rep the ‘clique’.”
There seems to be no bad blood between West and Mescudi. Mescudi consulted West’s frequent collaborator Jay-Z in understanding the best way to break the news.
Kid Cudi’s third studio album Indicud is set to release April 23rd, and features no members of the G.O.O.D. Music collective.
What do you think of this? Kid Cudi’s music has taken a more abstract approach of recent, incorporating much spacier weed-comforting sounds and less rapping. Do you think Kid Cudi’s career will benefit or take a hit by the decision?
