Best Songs Ever: “That’s The Bag I’m In” by Fred Neil

“They’ll probably drop the atom bomb the day my ship comes in…”

That line alone would be enough to make this a favorite of mine. It carries a beautifully dejected sentiment that sets this song and Fred Neil apart as probably the most genuine blues artifact to come out of the blues-revival movement of the 60s. Apart from that, the purely cool ‘tude that pervaded Fred Neil’s work makes this masterpiece of resignation sizzle in its almost spiteful, keep-your-head-up strut.

I can’t count the days in which this song has gotten me through bus rides, long drives, or trudges through school halls. Best. Song. Ever.
